Getting Involved - Catholic Ministry

No Room On the Sidelines

As a child, I was involved in a number of sports.  Because of my true lack of athletic ability, I spent most of that time on the sidelines.  In every game, I sat anxiously awaiting my opportunity to get in the game.  Even though I was never brought in to be the game-changer, I wanted nothing more than to participate.  Years later, I found this same feeling in my life at the Church.  What I offer the Church may not be a game-changer, but I just want to get in the game.

Living a life on the sidelines of the Church is pointless.  But, many of us stay on the sidelines because we fail to see what we can offer the Church.  We are not all called to be the one standing in front of the crowd giving a rousing sermon, just as I was never meant to be that all-star player.  Yet, we all have a place.  It takes a team to win the game, and it takes the whole Church to glorify God.  No matter how we participate, we are helping to win the game, and we are helping to strengthen the Church.

Our Gifts

We are all given gifts.  Some are natural speakers, and they can electrify the Church through their teachings and sermons.  Some are writers, and their writings can move our hearts and change the world.  Some are singers, and the music that comes off their lips makes the angels rejoice.  But, not everyone shares in those talents.  That is okay.  What we need to recognize is the talent that we do have.  We cannot be somebody else.  We can only be the person God created us to be.

"There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone."  -1 Corinthians 12:4-6 NAB

Are you a sort of handyman?  Then, donate your time repairing things around the church.  Can you cook or bake?  Then, make some of those wonderful goodies that I love to get at the church bake sale.  Whatever your talent may be, Christ wants you to use it.  Even if you do not have any of the traditional, hands-on skills, but you have a compassionate heart, then be there, in love, with someone who is hurting.  It does not matter what our talents are.  What matters is that we use them for Christ.

Finding Your Gifts

The Christian book market has a large number of books that teach you how to find your gifts.  They are excellent resources, and I would encourage you to try reading one.  But, at the same time, look into your heart.  You know your gifts.  You know what your talents are.  Most of the time, our gifts and talents shine through in our career and in our hobbies.  Nobody knows you better than you.  So, take some time.  Pray about it.  Look deeply in yourself.  The answer is there.  You just have to find it.

Get Involved

The Church needs your help.  Find out what you can offer and start doing it.  One of the biggest obstacles to people getting involved is procrastination.  "I'll start tomorrow.  I'm busy today."  Or, "Next week is a little more open in my schedule."  We constantly use excuses as to why we do not get involved.  In my own life, I had a large number of excuses.  For years, I have felt that God wanted me to write.  Whether it was for a website, a book, it didn't matter.  Christ was asking me to do something, and I had nothing but excuses.  The time for excuses is over.

Get off the sidelines, and get involved.  God has given you a number of gifts and talents that He wants you to use to serve Him.  Find your gifts, and find a way to get in the game.  There is no excuse.  In whatever way you can, it is time for you to get involved.

"Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up.  So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to our family of the faith."  -Galatians 6:9-10 NAB
