RCIA - Confirmation for Adults

Confirmation is the second of the Sacraments of Initiation.  Cradle Catholics usually go through Confirmation in their pre-teen or teen years, after they have reached the age of reason.  Adults that did not go through this process, like me, will go through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults or RCIA.  We may be older, but it is never too late.  Confirmation, and the RCIA process, is an important step toward becoming a Catholic and growing in faith.

Completing Our Baptism

Whether we are Baptized as children or as adults, we are given God's grace.  Through Confirmation, we complete that process that began with our Baptism.  Prior to Baptism, we are anointed with oil to cleanse our soul.  It prepares us for what we will face as Christians.  During Confirmation, we are anointed once again.  This time, we take the "seal of the Holy Spirit (CCC, 1295)."  With this seal, we have given our life, in service, to Christ.

Confirmation begins by renewing our baptismal promises, and it is followed by confessing our faith.  Publicly, we are announcing that we have chosen to follow Christ, and we begin on a deeper journey of faith.  Although this may conclude one part of our life, it is the beginning of another.  At that moment, we have chosen a new path.  We have chosen a life with Christ.

Laying of the Hands

In the days of the New Testament, the laying of hands signified someone receiving the Holy Spirit.  Through the laying of hands, Confirmation brings the Holy Spirit into our lives.  At that moment, the Spirit brings wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord into our lives (USCCA).  In an instant, through the awesome power of God, we have grown immensely.  Our lives will never be the same.

The Holy Spirit now guides us.  Attempting to listen to God can be one of the most difficult things to do.  At times, He speaks loudly.  At other times, He speaks in a gentle whisper.  Only with the gifts that we receive at Confirmation can we begin to truly listen to God's calls.  Can you hear him calling you?
