Catholic Movie, Book, and Website Reviews

Take a trip to the local, big-box bookstore; you will struggle to find many Catholic books.  Even try going to many Christian bookstores; you will have the same result.  Searching online for quality Catholic books at the major online retailers is not much easier.  So, how do we know if a book is truly teaching truths of the Catholic faith?

When I first became Catholic, I did not know where to start.  Now, my day job is with a company that works with some of the largest Catholic book publishers.  With that expertise, my goal is to show you some of the great Catholic books out there, from large and small publishers alike.

I hope you find these resources helpful, and please send any recommendations for great Catholic books, movies, and wesites.

God's Voice Within

Catholics Mean BusinessCan you discern God's will for your life?  How do we know what God wants for us?  Is there a way for us to listen to or hear God's voice?  Discernment can be one of the greatest challenges we face in our spiritual journey, but in his book, God's Voice Within, Mark E. Thibodeaux, SJ teaches us how to listen for God's wisdom and guidance.

God's Voice Within takes its message from St. Ignatius of Loyola's teachings on discernent found in the Spiritual Exercises.  While the Spiritual Exercises focuses on retreat-style learning, Thibodeaux's book helps to bring St. Ignatius's teaching to us in a way that we can incorporate directly into our daily lives.  He brings his years of experience as a Jesuit, specifically in prayer and discernment, to the printed page.

Walking with God: A Journey through the Bible

Walking with God: A Journey through the BibleOne goal of many Catholics and Christians is to read the Bible in its entirety.  Not knowing where to start, many of us simply start at the beginning and try to read the Bible from cover to cover - like every other book that we've read.  We soon find out that this might be more difficult than we first imagined.  As a guide to help us understand the Bible, Jeff Cavins and Tim Gray have written an excellent book, Walking with God: A Journey through the Bible.

Reading the Bible from cover to cover can be hard for anyone to follow the narrative story of the Bible.  Walking with God: A Journey through the Bible simplifies this by grouping together major periods from Scripture and laying out the Bible as the beautiful story that it is.  If you're looking for an easy, fun way to really understand the history of the Church, from Adam and Eve to David, from Jesus to the early Church, this book is the answer.

If Protestantism is True: The Reformation Meets Rome
Book Reviews

If Protestantism is TrueIn his book, If Protestantism is True: The Reformation Meets Rome, Devin Rose examines the claims made by the Protestant faith and defends the Catholic faith with knowledge and truth.  His examination of Protestant views is both fair and equal, but still focuses on explaining how it is incorrect.  Despite his opposition to Protestant teachings, he shows deep respect for their beliefs, especially as a former Protestant himself.  He avoids argumentative language and never slanders them for their differences.

For Protestants, this book will be an eye-opening look at Catholic doctrine.  It directly addresses misconceptions about the Catholic faith and how they have shaped the world's distorted view of Catholicism.  He also examines the errors in Protestant teaching.  He does this in a way that will lead to examination and discovery through thoughtful questions.
