Confess Your Sins....

One of the greatest ways to lift the burden of sin off of you is to confess your sins to someone else:

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful. -James 5:16, NAB

This verse is one of many used in Apologetics to explain the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or Confession.  However, instead of focusing on the Sacrament, I just want to look at the power of opening our hearts to one another.

Our sins and mistakes can be a heavy burdern to bear.  They weigh heavily on our hearts and can stop us from moving forward.  One way to free ourselves from them is to share them with others.

Now, of course, this does not mean that we need to publicly air our dirty laundry.  We do not need to rent a billboard to post our most wicked and vile acts.  We simply need to open up to someone that we can trust.  We can seek comfort and counseling from someone who will not expose us to the world.

This is the beauty of the confessional.  We know that the sins we confess to a priest will not be shared with others.  He will not gossip about our sins with others, and he will not use them in any way against us.

Confession is not just a yearly requirement of the Church, it is an opportunity to relieve the burden of our sins and past mistakes off of our shoulders.  The Church's precept to attend Confession once a year is not for the Church's sake - but for our own.
