The Power of Prayer....

The story of Elijah shows the true power of prayer:

Elijah was a human being like us; yet he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain upon the land. Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit. -James 5:17-18, NAB

Elijah prayed for a drought, and it came.  He prayed for it to rain again, and it did.  But Elijah could not control the rain himself.  It was the power of prayer - and God's willingness to answer those prayers - that made the difference.

Since the days of Elijah, I'm sure that many farmers have prayed for desperately needed rain, and it never came.  People in other climates may have prayed for the rain to stop, and it didn't.  Does that mean Elijah was special?  Yes and no.

Of course, Elijah was a prophet of the Old Testament, which in some ways, makes him special.  Other than that, he was a man just like you and I.  There was nothing he could do to control the rain.

God answered Elijah's prayers in miraculous ways.  The Lord showed His true power to the world.  Meanwhile, Elijah shows us the power of prayer.  We may not be able to stop the rain ourselves, but we can definitely talk to the One who can.

God may not answer all of our prayers with a miracle, but He will if it's appropriate.  Most of the time, though, He will simply answer them in the way we need (even if it's not the way we like).

The power of prayer has the ability to do some amazing things.  We may not always get the miracle we hoped for, but we will never know if we never ask.
