Speaking Through the Spirit
In 1 Corinthians 2:9-10, we learned that the true nature of God is beyond our understanding. Only by the Holy Spirit can we begin to fathom the true depths of the Lour our God. In 1 Corinthians 2:13, we learn that the Holy Spirit comes to help us once again, but this time, the Spirit helps us share our faith in the Lord:
"And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms." -1 Corinthians 2:13, NAB
As difficult as it may be to even begin to understand God, it is even more difficult when someone asks us to put what we believe into words. As Catholics, people will often have a number of questions about our faith. If we try to share simply what comes from our own understanding, we will never be able to fully describe it. Just as we look to the Spirit to guide us in understanding, we must also look to Him for the right words to say about our faith. When I write for this website, or anywhere else for that matter, I go where the Spirit leads me. In some ways, when I am finished writing, I look back and feel like I was on autopilot. I simply sit down in front of a keyboard and let Him do the rest. If people know of your faith, they will question you, and you must be ready to answer their questions. However, being prepared is not about studying Scripture and the writings of the early Church; it is about being spiritually prepared to let the Spirit speak through you. It may be difficult, but as life presents these opportunities to share our faith, turn to the Spirit and let Him show you the way.
