Our Body is the Temple of God

Today's verse has been quoted over and over again.  It has been used for a number of different reasons, but see if you recognize it:

"Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy."  -1 Corinthians 3:16-17, NAB

It is often used to teach us that we should take care of our bodies because it is the temple of God.  This includes abstaining from drugs and other things that harm our body.  It is also used to motivate Christians into a diet plan.  While I think that's important, I think this verse goes beyond how much we tip the scales.  Instead of looking at it from a physical sense, we need to look at it from a spiritual sense.  Our bodies, as the temple of God, are holy, and we should treat them as such.  This includes every deed, every thought, and every action that we take in our bodies.  Many times, people will go to church on Sundays, and they will put their best foot forward.  They will be nice, cordial, and full of smiles, but the moment they walk out of church is a different story.  But why?  Do they think God only sees how they act in church?  Of course not.  He not only sees us; He is living within us, His holy temple. Also, the way we act should reflect the beauty of God within us to those around us.  If we are foul, horrible people, then we are destroying God's temple in the eyes of others.  We profess to be good Christians and Catholics, but others do not see us that way.  God bless you if you have a six-pack stomach and can run two marathons a day, but we must see our bodies beyond the physical into the spiritual.  We are God's holy temple, and we should let the world see His beauty and glory in everything that we do.
