Last in This World...
The church in Corinth needed guidance, and Paul is trying to teach them how to follow in Christ's footsteps:
"For as I see it, God has exhibited us apostles as the last of all, like people sentenced to death, since we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and human beings alike." -1 Corinthians 4:9, NAB
Throughout Christ's teachings, there were themes of letting go of this world and focusing on the next. Most famously, the Beatitudes told us how to truly be blessed. "Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:10)." Paul is echoing the Beatitudes here. To be the greatest of all in heaven, we must be the lowest of all on earth. To receive the treasures of heaven, we must let go of the treasures of this world. Our greatest challenges come from the sin and temptation that comes from this world. It separates us from God, and we freely choose that separation through our thoughts and our actions. But if we want to overcome this world, we must be willing to become the last of all, letting go of our earthly life and clinging to heaven. No matter what challenges or struggles may come, we must hold onto our faith. For if we are willing to let go now, we will receive blessings from the Lord at the hour of our death.
