Out With the Old...
A diet plan according to Paul - get rid of the yeast:
"Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." -1 Corinthians 5:7-8, NAB
If you are somewhat confused, this verse is building on yesterday's topic from 1 Corinthians 5:6. In that verse, Paul compared sin that spreads through our entire lives to yeast that permeates through dough. Even the smallest amount of sin will begin to overtake our lives, but there is hope for a fresh start. If we get rid of the sin in our lives, no matter how small of sins they may be, the door is opened for us to join Christ at the table. First, we learned that we should avoid sin because of the disastrous effects it has on our lives. Now, we learn that we not only avoid disastrous results, but also join in on the celebration. Avoiding sin is more than just avoiding obstacles in our path; avoiding sin is the path to a joyful life. Often times, we follow God's law simply because that is what we have been taught. Like children, we simply do what we are told because we do not want to get in trouble. However, there is so much more beyond that. By living a life according to the Lord's commandments, the doors to a greater peace and joy than we could have ever imagined will be opened. Let go of your sin, avoid the obstacles that it can bring, and join Christ in the great celebration.
