Our Body is the Lord's...

Who does our body belong to?  It does not belong to us; it belongs to God:

"The body, however, is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power."  -1 Corinthians 6:13-14, NAB

Often times, we focus heavily on the needs of our body.  Beyond our basic needs, we are often fueled by our desires which leads us into temptation.  Today's culture is one that believes in indulging to our heart's content with little concern for morality, but as Catholics and Christians, we must realize that our body does not belong to us.  We may have the free will to do with our bodies as we please, but that does not mean that we should do with our bodies what we please.  Think of the seven deadly sins, and one can see how many of them relate back to our bodies.  Sloth is the lack of use of our bodies for God's purposes.  Gluttony is the overindulgence of the desires of our body.  And, lust is giving into our sexual desires.  While we have the freedom to do with our bodies what we choose, God calls us to a pure existence.  Romans 6:23 tells us that the "wages of sin is death;" thus, we must not give into our sinful desires, and as we read in 1 Corinthians 6, our bodies belong to God.  By living a moral life, we are giving our body to Him so that one day He may raise us in His glory.  Do not think of what you are giving up to live a moral life; think of what you will be receiving instead.
