Bought and Paid For...

Lately, we have been discussing avoiding sin and immorality, but why?  Because we have been bought and paid for:

"For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body."  -1 Corinthians 6:20, NAB

In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul tells us what is beneficial for us, that our body belongs to the Lord, and that we should avoid immorality.  He tells us that us that our body is a temple, and it belongs to the Lord.  Why must we follow this?  Because we have been bought and paid for.

Whenever we purchase something, we want to get the best quality at the best price.  We analyze the product we are purchasing and compare it to alternatives.  We look for sales and coupons to get it at the best price we can.  For Christ, He knew that He was buying a damaged product, and He was willing to pay the ultimate price for it.  Through our sin, we are broken and not worthy of being purchased.  Sitting on a store shelf, broken and in pieces from our sin, no one should want us.  In our broken state, you would think that we would be on clearance, but we are still marked at the full price.  Imagine Jesus walking through the store and seeing us on the shelf, and our price is marked "everything."  He chooses to buy us even though we are broken, and it is going to cost Him everything.  He loads up His cart and takes us up to the register.  He freely chooses to buy us at the ultimate price.

This analogy may seem a bit strange, but it gives a better mental picture of what Christ is doing for us.  We are broken and damaged, but He chooses us anyway.  We are not worth the price He paid, but He gave it all anyway.  Yet, we try to bargain with Him in the choices we make.  We are not willing to make sacrifices of our own; we are not willing to pay the ultimate price.  Christ gave everything for us, and we should give everything to Him in return.  As we face the challenges of our sacrifices, we must remember the price He paid at the cross.
