Focusing Our Relationship on Christ...
At times, we must take a step back and make sure that our focus remains on God:
"Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by mutual consent for a time, to be free for prayer, but then return to one another, so that Satan may not tempt you through your lack of self-control." -1 Corinthians 7:5, NAB
At the center of our relationships, Christ must always be present. If we try to live our lives and deny this, we will lose focus of what really matters. In this verse, Paul tells us that one of the times that we may choose to take a step back from our intimate relationship is to refocus our lives on prayer. As we get caught up in the daily grind of life, we may become overly focused on this world, and we must remember to stay grounded in our faith. Prayer is one of the greatest ways for us to reconnect with our Lord and build lasting bonds with Him. Beyond prayer, we have the wonderful gifts of the Sacraments that we can turn to as we try to reconnect with our Lord. Together, a couple that retreats to prayer and the Sacraments will find a lasting bond and the strength to take on any challenge.
When we take a step back like this, we will face challenges; it will not be easy. We will begin to face temptation as Satan himself tries to exploit our weaknesses; however, the rewards will be worth the struggles we face. At times, it may be difficult to see the rewards that we may find by doing this but having a relationship rooted in Christ will have benefits beyond our comprehension. There are few greater blessings than finding the love of your life, and we should honor that blessing by always focusing on the One who made that blessing possible.
