The Choice of Celibacy...
One of the highly-debated topics in culture today surrounds the Catholic view of celibacy. Paul challenges us to this life in today's verse:
"Indeed, I wish everyone to be as I am, but each has a particular gift from God, one of one kind and one of another." -1 Corinthians 7:7, NAB
Generally, I write a small commentary on each verse, but today, I will let Scripture do most of the talking. One thing I will say, Paul states that he wishes that we could remain celibate as he did, but that he understands that some are called to it and others are not. Some will receive the joy that comes from a celibate life, while others will receive the gift that can be found through Holy Matrimony. Which one we choose is up to us.
Paul guides us in the following verses - 1 Corinthians 7:8-16
Finally, I would like to sum all of this up with an important verse that I feel outweighs the rest:
"Only, everyone should live as the Lord has assigned, just as God called each one. I give this order in all the churches." -1 Corinthians 7:17
No matter where we find our lives, or where our lives may be heading, it is important for us live out our faith in the way God has called us to do. We may not be celibate; we may not be priests; but, God is calling us to live our lives according to His commandments. Unfortunately, topics like these have become more political than spiritual. Yet, they remain a personal choice that each man and woman must decide for themselves. May God bless you in whatever choice you make.
