Freedom from Slavery...

In our beautiful country, we have freed ourselves of slavery, but it still exists in the world today.  Christians all over the world struggle with overcoming their slavery:

"Everyone should remain in the state in which he was called. Were you a slave when you were called? Do not be concerned but, even if you can gain your freedom, make the most of it. For the slave called in the Lord is a freed person in the Lord, just as the free person who has been called is a slave of Christ. You have been purchased at a price. Do not become slaves to human beings. Brothers, everyone should continue before God in the state in which he was called."  -1 Corinthians 7:20-24, NAB

For those who find themselves in slavery, they can find peace that they are free in Christ.  What this verse points out, however, is that we all become slaves of Christ.  Like a slave, we are bought at a price, and it was paid at the cross.  Our master should not be of this world, but the One Holy Master in heaven.  Our status in life among men means very little to God.  We should not worry about who we are to this world.  Our focus, instead, should be on who we are to Christ.

Beyond the explanation of this verse, we are bound to another form of a slavery: sin.  Often times, we bind ourselves through our thoughts and desires as we give in to temptation.  We freely choose this slavery.  While truly being a slave to another man may not be a concern of ours, we must not be a slave to ourselves.  Contrary to popular culture, we do not belong to ourselves, but to God.  We have the power to break the chains of sin and give ourselves over as slaves to Christ.  Are you willing to give your life over to Him?
