False Gods and Other Idols...
For us, there is only one true God:
"Indeed, even though there are so-called gods in heaven and on earth (there are, to be sure, many "gods" and many "lords"), yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist." -1 Corinthians 8:5-6, NAB
Many feel that worshiping false gods and idols is something from the past, or from other cultures. They hear stories of people worshiping golden statues and other religious symbols, but they feel our modern society is above that. What they fail to see are the idols of today; the symbols that have replaced religion and pull us away from God. These symbols come in the form of money, power, or fame. It may come in the form of a person, such as a celebrity, writer, or speaker, that we hold in high esteem. Greatest of all, in our modern society, we have made gods and idols of ourselves. Our culture is fascinated with "self." We indulge in everything we can, and we think only of ourselves. We are taught to be self-seeking and self-fulfilling. Woe is the way of the wicked. Be careful that we do not hold ourselves, or these things, in too high of regard. If we do, we separate ourselves from the love of God, and that is a dangerous place to be. Stay focused on the one, true God, our Lord, Jesus Christ.
