Why I Write...
God gives each of us different callings and the talents we need to accomplish them. Today's verse is one that truly inspires me:
"If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!" -1 Corinthians 9:16, NAB
Only a few short months ago, Waking Up Catholic came into existence. Now, it has reached more people than I ever imagined. But, what led me to begin this endeavor in the first place? Going through the RCIA process changed me. Some people will choose to go through it just to get it done. Others, like myself, dive into the depths of the Catholic faith through prayer, reading Scripture, and studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church. At first, I came up with more questions than answers, but I found that this made me thirst even more for greater knowledge. By the time I completed RCIA, I had learned more than I ever thought I would, and it left an impression on my heart. After RCIA, I wanted to share what I learned with the world!
For quite some time, this thought stood in my heart. With talents in writing, speaking, and technology, I knew that God wanted me to use the gifts He has given me, but I always doubted my abilities. In this way, I could never boast about anything I do. Honestly, when I read my own writing, I am anything but impressed, yet I feel Him pulling at my heart. When I felt led to create a website, I was sure that few would ever see it, but my doubts cannot stop the Lord's good works. Even today, I still feel that He wants me to pursue getting published, but my doubts try to get in the way. Despite my fears, I will do as my Father asks; I will never give up.
Verses like today's inspire me greatly. God puts an obligation on all of us to use the talents He has given us. If you are given the gift of speaking, go tell the world about Jesus. If you are well-skilled with your hands, go build Him a church. If you are given a heart for the poor, go feed them in His name. Whatever your gifts and talents may be, do not bury them. Let the Lord use you in whatever way you can.
This may help you in your troubled times: whenever I begin to struggle with doubt, I tell myself that changing one life will make it all worth while. Well, even if no other soul ever read my writing, I can tell you that it did change at least one life - mine.
