Living as Christ's Chosen People...

In Colossians 3, we learn about the virtues that are at the center of the Christian heart:

"Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience..."  -Colossians 3:12, NAB

These virtues should be at the center of who we are.  As Catholics, we must be compassionate to the world's pain, always kind to even the wicked, humble enough to give God all of the glory, as gentle as the Lamb, and patient enough to wait on God's timing.  Of these, patience to wait on the Lord is one that many struggle with, and I have personally endured for quite some time.  As we wait on the Lord, we must hold fast to our faith, trusting in Him.

"...bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do."  -Colossians 3:13, NAB

Without forgiveness, the other virtues begin to lose their purpose.  We cannot be compassionate if we hold contempt in or heart, kind if we are scorned, humble if we are proud, gentle if we are stubborn, or patient if we are restless.  No matter how someone may have wronged us, we must learn to let go.  If we want to find peace in our hearts, we must let go of the anger and hostility within.  Even if the pain comes not by what someone has done to us, but what has been in their past, we must also forgive them for the mistakes that they have already made.  We must accept them for who they are now, not for who they were then.

"...and over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection."  -Colossians 3:14, NAB

Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and even forgiveness get their true power from love.  Love has the ability to conquer all of the pain, anger, and sadness that the world has to offer.  If we want to find peace in this world, we will find it in love - love for our neighbor, love for our family, love for the "love of our lives," and, most importantly, love for the One who created love - our merciful God.  May you find the love and peace that you have been searching for by living out the your life through the virtues that Christ has called us to live.

Today's verse takes a special meaning for me.  My life has had its challenges, but life is beginning to fall into place, and a major part of that is finding someone to love.  Through Christian virtues, we have been patiently waiting on God's timing.  Through forgiveness, we can accept each other for who we are, and who we were.  Through love, we can find perfection.  May God continue to bless us with the richness of His love, and may we always keep Him at the center of our lives.  Love you, sweetie.
