It's YOUR Freedom...
Do you live your life for the sake of others?
"For why should my freedom be determined by someone else's conscience?" -1 Corinthians 10:29, NAB
In life, one of the largest traps that we will face is in seeking the approval of others. Often times, this fits in with the "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality. Even adults can fall prey to peer pressure. Our friends, family, and neighbors will try to convince us that something is okay to do, even though we know it is not. Our moral struggle begins as we have to decide whether to do what is socially acceptable or spiritually acceptable. In all situations, spiritually acceptable is the correct answer.
How does this relate to what Paul is saying in this verse? Well, we cannot make our choices based on what others believe is right. When we do, we are putting our freedom, our ultimate freedom, in their hands. When we get to heaven, God will judge us for our actions, no matter who told us to do it. As Catholics and Christians, the Holy Spirit often comes to us through our conscience. So, instead of listening to the conscience of others, we should listen to our own conscience, through the direction of the Holy Spirit. Our freedom depends on it.
