The Eucharist...

Paul recounts the story of the Last Supper:

"For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, 'This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.'"  -1 Corinthians 11:23-25, NAB

The Eucharist is one of the most beautiful gifts that the Lord has given us.  Through the Eucharist, we are drawn closer to Him.  As Catholics, we experience the real body and real blood of Jesus Christ through this beautiful Sacrament.  We believe in transubstantiation, or the change of substance of the bread and wine into the actual substance of the body and blood.  In this way, we have a deeper experience with Christ through Holy Communion.

Through Christ's sacrifice on the cross, which we experience fully in the Eucharist, we have a new covenant with our Lord.  This new covenant, or agreement, offers us salvation through Jesus Christ, our Savior.  In that way, the Eucharist is at the center of our faith and beliefs, and we owe the Eucharist, and Christ's sacrifice, the respect that it deserves.  Attending Mass each week is not about fulfilling an obligation; instead, attending Mass is participating and honoring the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

This week, as you attend Mass, reflect fully on what the Eucharist, and our Lord's sacrifice, means in your life.  Through Christ, we have the gift of His mercy and the hope for eternal salvation.    Through Christ, we find the meaning of our lives and a reason to live to a higher calling.  Christ loves you through all of your faults, and He always will.
