Our Spiritual Gifts...

Each one of us receives unique spiritual gifts from the Lord:

"To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes."  -1 Corinthians 12:7-11, NAB

Yesterday, we discussed how we are each given spiritual gifts to use for God's purpose, and that those gifts are unique to each one of us.  We learned that we must not be jealous of the gifts that others have received but learn to use the gifts that we were given.  Today, we learn about the different types of gifts that the Lord may give us.  It discusses the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, deeds, prophecy, and others.  And this list is only a basic overview of the multitude of gifts that we may receive.

What are your gifts?  You may feel that you have not received any of the ones already mentioned, but you received gifts nonetheless.  Personally, I do not feel that my true gift is that of writing, but of comprehension.  What do I mean by that?  Well, the Lord has given me the ability to read something, a Bible verse for example, and interpret it and make it easier for others to understand.  At the same time, the Lord gave me the gift of understanding technology.  With that gift, I created this website, a Facebook page, and I am looking into more avenues of using technology to evangelize.  You won't find either of these gifts in Paul's list from 1 Corinthians 12, but they are gifts just the same.

So, I ask again, what are your gifts?  Are you good with your hands?  Then, help with the maintenance at your parish.  Are you a good teacher?  Then, start a Bible study or small group.  Do you have a compassionate heart?  Then, help feed, clothe, and provide shelter for God's people.  The list goes on.  Each one of these gifts is just as important as any other gift.  While these gifts may not get the press that writing, speaking, and preaching receive, they can be just as important.  While the writers and speakers of this world may be God's voice, it is God's hands through various acts of service that truly make a difference.  Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, while she was a very wise woman, truly made a difference through her works of service, not her gift of speech.

God gave you a number of talents and abilities, and I truly feel that these can be used as spiritual gifts.  Reflect on what you are good at, and you will begin to see what your gifts might be. But, that is just the first step.  Once we figure out what our gifts are, we need to use them.  So, go use them!
