The Gift or Prophesy...

In today's verse, Paul begins to talk about spiritual gifts once again:

"Pursue love, but strive eagerly for the spiritual gifts, above all that you may prophesy."  -1 Corinthians 14:1, NAB

Throughout Corinthians, spiritual gifts seem to be a topic that continues to come up.  I believe that this shows how important Paul felt it was for us to pursue the various gifts that we were given through the Holy Spirit.  Of these gifts, he challenges us to pursue the gift of prophesy above all.

What is prophesy?  Many mistakingly believe that this is being able to see the future.  While God did give a divine revelation for some to share with the world, in the Christian sense, being a prophet simply means being one who shares God's message with the world.  With a better understanding of what it means to be a prophet, we can begin to see why we are all being called to be a prophet.

Using our gifts is an important part of our spiritual journey.  No matter what our gifts may be, it is important that we develop and use them for the glory of God's kingdom.  And, while many may be born with a natural gift of prophesy, it is a gift that we should all learn to develop to some degree.  As a prophet, we may not all stand on stage, publish a book, or appear on the television, but we can still be a prophet on our own stage, with our friends, family, and neighbors.  When we share the good news of Christ with our loved ones, we are being God's prophet.

I urge you to not be quiet.  Do not be afraid to share your faith with those around you.  Look back to the time that you began to develop your faith, and there was probably a number of people that helped guide you along the way; without them overcoming their fears, you would not be where you are today.  Over and over again in the Bible, we are called to share our love of Jesus Christ with the world.  This was not simply a calling for some, but for all.
