Remember the Gospel...

Sometimes, we need to be reminded of the source of our faith:

"Now I am reminding you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain."  -1 Corinthians 15:1-2, NAB

It is easy to get lost into the depths of our faith and forget the foundation on which it is built.  We spend a great deal of time debating the smallest points of our faith, but we often forget the source of it.  No matter where we may be on our journey, we must always turn back to the Gospel.

Notice in this verse that Paul does not simply say to follow the Gospel that we have read, but also the Gospel that has been preached to us.  When he wrote this letter to the Corinthians, the Bible did not exist as it does today.  The early Christians could  not look up a passage in Matthew or Luke to find the answers they were looking for.  The only source of the Gospel they had was through the teaching of the Apostles and other leaders of the early Church.

Nowadays, we are blessed to have the Gospel in written form, and we can use the written account to follow Jesus as He shares His message here on earth.  While we have the Gospel in written form, this does not wipe out the power of the Gospel that is preached to us every week in Mass and taught to us by the Catholic Church.  Through the canonized books of the Bible, we have an excellent source of Scripture to draw from, but through the Church we have a living version of the Gospel as well.

The Gospel, as Paul teaches us, is the place where we can find God's saving grace.  In the written books of the Bible and from the teaching shared with us by the Church, the Gospel is the center of our faith, our lives here on earth, and our hope for an everlasting life in heaven.  Always remember the Gospel.
