Roots of Faith...

Before we dive into the depth of Scripture, we must remember this one simple truth:

"For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures."  -1 Corinthians 15:3-4, NAB

As Paul states, this is of "first importance."  This verse is a statement of the basic truth of our faith.  Christ died, was buried, and rose from the dead.  It is at the center of what we believe and the roots of our faith.  Before we can believe or understand anything else, we must fully understand and grasp this first.

This verse reads similar to the creeds as a basic statement of our faith.  There are those who say that Christ was a prophet, a teacher, or just a "good man," but we understand Him to be so much more.  He is the Christ, the Anointed One, who came down from heaven to save us from our sins through His sacrifice on the cross.  All of this happened in accordance with the Scriptures.

While spending the last couple of months working through 1 Corinthians, we have covered a number of topics, but none as important as this.  We often spend a great deal of time researching different aspects of our faith, and we almost seem to take for granted the awesomeness in this one lesson.  When we really stop and reflect on Christ's death and resurrection, we can truly see God's love and mercy at work in our lives.  We spend so much time on studying Christ the Teacher that we do not spend enough time on Christ the Savior.

God loves you so much that He sent His Son to die on the cross for you.  Paul felt that it was important to remind the people of Corinth, and so I feel that it is important to remind you as well.  Instead of spending time researching anything else, take a few moments to pray and reflect on what Christ has really done for us.  May we never forget or take for granted the amazing love and grace that He showed us on the cross.
