The Whole Truth...

We cannot pick and choose what parts of the Gospel we believe and do not believe:

"But if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then neither has Christ been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then empty (too) is our preaching; empty, too, your faith."  -1 Corinthians 15:12-14, NAB

There are those who seem to pick and choose what parts of the Gospel they believe, and what parts they do not.  Many Catholics that do this are referred to as "Cafeteria Catholics."  Generally, the term is used for those who disagree with the Church about abortion, birth control, and other issues, but some do not fully accept Christ's death and resurrection.  They see Christ as a teacher and a prophet, but not necessarily as One risen from the dead.  Outside of the Church, there are even more who feel the same way.

To call ourselves Catholics and Christians, we must hold to this one central truth: Christ died for our sins and was resurrected on the third day.  It is the center of our faith.  Without it, our faith, as Paul states, is empty.  The forgiveness of our sins depends on it:

"For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised, and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins."  -1 Corinthians 15:16-17, NAB

If we want to receive God's grace and mercy, if we want Him to forgive our sins, we must fully accept Christ's sacrifice on the cross.  It is an all or nothing deal.  We cannot pick and choose how much or how little we believe in this.  Jesus was more than a mere prophet or "good man;" He was and is the Savior of the world.
