Keeping Our Eyes on Christ...

In the book of Jude, we are warned to not hold onto worldly desires:

"But you, beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, for they told you, 'In (the) last time there will be scoffers who will live according to their own godless desires.' These are the ones who cause divisions; they live on the natural plane, devoid of the Spirit.

But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life."  -Jude 1:17-21, NAB

Time and time again, you have read my warnings against worldly desires.  It is a topic of our faith that I feel is vitally important now in our current day and age.  Our world seems to be drifting farther and farther from Christ, and moving closer and closer to the desires of this world.

Obviously, this is not a new problem for the world.  For it to be mentioned so long ago in the book of Jude, as well as many other times in the New Testament, the early Christians must have been seeing moral depravity in their times as well.  Every time man begins to fall into this sinful lifestyle, the world begins to fall apart on itself until we begin to straighten our ways.  But, how many times must we learn this lesson?

Our current economic crisis, with the high unemployment rates, record number of foreclosures, and growing poverty, is directly related to our choices.  God is not punishing us; we brought it upon ourselves.  We lived, and still live, in a lavish lifestyle where we focus on fulfilling all of our worldly desires, but then we are surprised when it caves in on us.  We have built a house of cards, yet we are surprised when it falls.

We must keep our lives rooted in Christ, focused on the only one that can truly fulfill our every need.  We need to let go of our desires, our will, and turn our lives over to His will.  Our worldly desires will only lead us to one result - failure and disappointment.  We experienced the fall once through Adam and Eve, must we recreate the fall over and over again in our own lives?

There is nothing to gain from this world, but we have everything to gain from a life rooted in faith.  You may not have the fanciest car, biggest house, $100,000 salary, or the other riches of this world, but you can have all of the riches that we find in the heavenly kingdom with Christ.  Worldly success seems to continually escape me; however, I find all of the success that I need in Christ.  How do you measure your success?
