Choosing Friends Wisely...

Who we surround ourselves with can have a big impact on our lives:

"Do not be led astray: 'Bad company corrupts good morals.'"  -1 Corinthians 15:33, NAB

Whether you are coming back to the Catholic Church, or you are coming to her for the first time, it is important to surround ourselves with the right people.  Unfortunately, many of the people around us will lead us in the wrong direction.  Good intentions often have the wrong ideas behind them, and our friends can mistakingly lead us astray.  They may not mean to do us harm, but they do anyway.

Personally, this verse hits very close to home.  In my own life, this is a challenge that I have been facing in a very real way.  While trying to live the life that Christ asks us to, I have met opposition from a number of different people.  There are times in our life when we are doing our best to follow the teachings of the Church, but then our friends and families may stand in the way.  Their worldly ways, even with the best intentions, are not the best way for us to live.

Following Christ can be a tough thing to do.  When we go against the status quo, even the people closest to us in our lives may question what we say and do.  Nevertheless, we must stick to God's plan, no matter how difficult it may be.  At any given point in our lives, there will be naysayers.  They will try to convince us to follow their way, instead of His way.  Without the same life rooted in faith, they cannot see the error of their ways.

Luckily, we can find support when we need it.  If you are questioning whether your decisions are correct, take it to the Church.  Talk to your priest, fellow parishioners, and other people of the Catholic faith.  Listen to what they have to say.  People have questioned my actions, and my motives as well, but when I take it to the Church, I can be sure that I am following the right path.  Following Christ's plan for our lives may not always be the most popular thing to do, but it is still the right thing to do.

Unfortunately, if your friends and family continue to pull you away from making the right choices, it may be time to say goodbye.  You do not have to completely cut them out of your life, but you definitely have to take what they have to say with a grain of salt.  Realize that their motivations may not be Christ-centered and make your choices accordingly.  They may not like you for your decisions, but you must follow Christ anyway.  It is just one more way that Christ asks us to take up our own cross daily.
