Our Weekly Offering...

Regularly giving to the Church is not a new idea:

"On the first day of the week each of you should set aside and save whatever one can afford..."  -1 Corinthians 16:2, NAB

The early Christians, even from the time of Peter and Paul, used to donate money to one, centralized Church.  This is important for two reasons.  First, it shows that regularly making an offering to the Church, on a weekly basis, was something that was instituted from the very beginning.  Second, the offerings went to one central Church.  This simple verse shows us a glimpse of what the early Church was like.

Weekly giving is a regular part of our weekly Mass.  Through our offerings, the Church receives the money it needs to sustain its operations.  Everything from the payroll to the electricity bill is paid through our offerings, and our offerings reach far beyond that.  With the global nature of the Catholic Church, the money we give each week will help feed the children of Africa and spread the Gospel in Asia.  Who knew that a small donation could reach so far!

The verse prior to this, 1 Corinthians 16:1, states, "...you also should do as I ordered the churches of Galatia."  So, Paul telling the Corinthians to set aside money was not just for them, but something that he had instructed the Church at large to do.  As a parish, we can do more together than a single person can do.  As a diocese, we can do more than a single parish.  As the whole, unified Catholic Church, we can do more than a single diocese can do; we can change the world!

Give what you can.  Give what you feel called to give.  If it were not for the blessings God has placed in your life, you would not have any money at all.  Paul is only asking us to give back a portion of what the Lord has given us.  The money you give goes beyond the local parish; it has the power to help change the world.  That is something worth giving for.
