Born Anew...

When we accept Christ into our lives, we begin a new life with Him:

"You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and abiding word of God."  -1 Peter 1:23, NAB

In the Protestant world, it is said that people are "born again" when they accept Christ.  It is from verses like today's that they draw this terminology, and I do not disagree with this idea.  Accepting Christ into our lives should bring us to a new life, a life where we no longer must fear death.

If we doubt that we must be reborn, then we should look to Christ's own words:

"Jesus answered and said to him, 'Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.'" - John 3:3, NAB

Through Baptism, our first Sacrament of Inititiation, we are freed from Original Sin and born again in Christ.  That is where we differ from Protestants who are born again.  They believe that they are born again after saying a prayer accepting Christ into their lives.  As Catholics, we are born again when Original Sin is washed away in Baptism.  Then, at Confirmation, we renew our Baptismal promises and accept the Holy Spirit into our lives.

Waking Up Catholic is dedicated to those going through this process.  For someone looking to join the Catholic Church, they must first be Baptized, if they have not been already.  Then, they renew their Baptismal promises at the end of the RCIA process at their Confirmation.  From that point on, they are born anew with the Holy Spirit and begin a new life with Christ.

Have you been born anew in Christ Jesus?  Have you accepted Him into your life?  Being born again in the Baptismal waters is more than a mere ritual; we are called to do it.  As Christ said in John 3:3, only those "born from above" will see the kingdom of God.  If you have not already, now is a great time to start the process.
