The Living Stone...

In Christ, we find the Cornerstone of the Church:

"Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."  -1 Peter 2:4-5, NAB

Most Christians have heard the term "cornerstone" used in reference to Christ many times, but what does it really mean?  In masonry, the cornerstone is the first stone that is laid out, and the rest of the stones build upon it.  If the cornerstone is not set correctly, the rest of the foundation will not be as strong as it should be.  It determines the position of the building, and the direction it will be heading.

Christ is the ultimate foundation to build up the Father's Church.  The Lord felt that it was so important that He came down as man to do the job Himself.  While there have been many great men over the centuries, including our long list of saints, being the Cornerstone was an important job.  If it was not set correctly, the rest of the Church might be off.  By setting Himself as the Cornerstone, Christ gives a great starting point for building the Church.

Like a building or wall, we, as the Church, draw our strength from the Cornerstone.  As stones, we may have our imperfections.  Yet, despite our imperfections, the Church remains sound because it rests upon the Cornerstone.  The rest of the foundation draws its strength from the perfect position and placement of this stone, just as we draw our strength from Christ.

Throughout His life, by His actions and His teachings, Christ set the location and direction of the Church.  By His example, we know exactly how we must live out our faith.  By His teachings, we have guidelines to follow.  He did not leave it for us to figure out on our own.  His example set the tone for the Church, and it has remained the same for the past 2000 years.

Now, when we hear that Jesus is the Cornerstone of the Church, we might have a bettter idea of what the real message is.  Christ came down to do the job, to set the tone for the Church Himself.  In this way, we can draw our strength from His.  In this way, we have a direction, purpose, and strong foundation for the Church.  Through Christ's works here on Earth, we have a Church that was designed to stand the test of time.
