Rejecting Stone...

Not everyone will accept Christ as the Cornerstone:

"For it says in scripture: 'Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame.' Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,' and 'A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall.' They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny."  -1 Peter 2:6-8, NAB

In yesterday's verse, we learned that Jesus is the Cornerstone of the Church.  Today's verse builds upon that teaching.  First, it states that whoever believes in Christ, the Cornerstone, "shall not be put to shame."  But, the verse continues by saying that there will be those who reject Christ, and others will stumble along the way because of Him.  Clearly, there will be those who do not see Christ as the Cornerstone of their life.

This verse is initially referring to the Jews who rejected Christ.  The builders refer to the Jews being God's chosen people and the ones who built the temple.  While the earliest Christians were mainly converts from Judaism to Christianity, there were many who did not accept Christ.  Today, there are many people who continue to reject Christ.  Our world is full of people who deny Christ, even some who label themselves as Catholics and Christians.  How can someone call themself a Catholic, but then reject Christ in all that they do?

Unfortunately, Christ will make some people stumble.  They stumble "by disobeying the word," and we can plainly see it with our eyes.  Everywhere we look, we can see those who reject Christ and disobey His Word.  In a culture where we worship all of the wrong things, Christ is missing from many people's lives.  It is our job as Christians to help them see the error of their ways.

For those of us who accept Christ, He is the Cornerstone of our faith, our world, and our Church, but for those who reject Him, their lives are lacking in many ways.  By our example and by our words, we must help to show those who have rejected Christ the error of their ways.  If they see how Christ is the cornerstone in our lives, they might stop rejecting Him and start accepting Him as the Cornerstone in their own lives.
