Who You Are Today...

It does not matter who you were; it only matters who you are:

"Once you were 'no people' but now you are God's people; you 'had not received mercy' but now you have received mercy."  -1 Peter 2:10, NAB

Wouldn't it be nice to forget our past?  There are parts of our past that we simply wish to forget.  While we may not forget our past, that does not mean that we cannot move forward anyway.  The moment we accept Christ into our lives, we begin a new journey, and we begin creating a new past.

When I look back over the mistakes that I have made in my life, I find it easy to get upset with myself.  You might be in the same situation.  Are there mistakes that you have made that seem to haunt you?  Even since I first became a Christian, I have made mistakes that have left a lifelong impact.  No matter what I do, those mistakes will remain a reality, and there is nothing I can do to change them.  Fortunately, it does not matter where we've been - only where we're going.

Our mistakes may haunt us, but we have hope for a new life as a child of Christ.  How awesome is it to say that we are a child of God?  Through Christ, we have received His mercy and our past will be forgiven.  Our mistakes no longer have to weigh us down.  We can simply give them over to Christ and focus on the road ahead.

Being a Catholic and a Christian does not stop us from continuing to make mistakes.  We may forget the mistakes that we have already made, but we cannot hold onto the ones we have yet to make.  Before bringing Christ into my life, it was easy to get bogged down by the mistakes I made, completely focused on the past.  But, as a Christian, I can stop looking back and start moving forward.  In Christ, we have hope for a better tomorrow.

For a long time, I did not who I was or who I would become.  Now, I am proud to call myself a Catholic and a Christian.  My past is behind me, and I am looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.
