The World is Watching...

What you do can be more important than what you say:

"Maintain good conduct among the Gentiles, so that if they speak of you as evildoers, they may observe your good works and glorify God on the day of visitation."  -1 Peter 2:12, NAB

When you publicly profess the name of Christ, the world will more closely watch what you do.  Some may simply be waiting for you to make a mistake so that they can point out your faults.  Opponents of Catholicism and Christianity will use your actions against you and convict Christ for your actions.  In everything you do, be aware that the world is watching.

Not too long after I launched WakingUpCatholic.com, I decided to put the website address on the back window of my car in big, bold letters.  While I was doing it to share the site with the community, I found it had another effect.  What it has done, to my surprise, is make me a better driver.  I am more aware of the way I drive now because I do not want to defame the site by my poor actions.  Even when the slightest bit of road rage begins to boil up, I think twice about my actions.  It made me question if I was doing the same thing on Christ's behalf.

Everyone who has known me for more than 5 minutes knows about my faith.  I am not afraid to let people know that I am a Catholic and a Christian.  What I often forget is that the unbelievers in my life are probably scrutinizing my actions.  Every thing I say, whether it is spoken, through my writing, or even of Facebook, gets evaluated.  Even more than what I say, my actions are watched even more very closely.

One thing we must be aware of is that even if we are a good Catholic 90% of the time, it is the 10% of the time that the world remembers.  They will not remember the charities you have helped, the people you have inspired, or how you have changed the world in even the smallest way.  Instead, they will remember that one mistake that they saw you make.  Based on that one mistake, they will use it to justify their lack of faith.

I would love to pretend that I am a good person 100% of the time.  Hey, I would even love to think that I am a good person even 90% of the time, but I know that I still fall short.  And, there are times when we just don't feel like doing the right thing or being a good person.  But, it is at those times that I challenge you to pull through the temptations.  At those times, be a good person, not for your sake, but for Christ instead.  Remember, the world is watching, and it is in those difficult moments that Christ's light will really shine through.
