The Beauty of a Woman...

Women can be a shining example of Christ's love to the men in their lives:

"Likewise, you wives should be subordinate to your husbands so that, even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives' conduct when they observe your reverent and chaste behavior. Your adornment should not be an external one: braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine clothes, but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which is precious in the sight of God."  -1 Peter 3:1-4, NAB

Feminism has done many great things, including bringing women equal rights, but it has been terrible for femininity itself.  During the whole movement, somehow, I feel that women were taught that it is wrong to be focused on their families.  They were taught that they need to be strong, stubborn, and overly career-focused.  Meanwhile, those are the same traits that men are taught are wrong.  It can be so confusing.

Roles in our society are a blurry mess.  We are forgetting who we are and who we were made to be.  By no means do I want to diminish the role of women; women play a key, vital role in our families and society as a whole.  However, society is teaching false truths about what it means to be a woman, just as it is teaching false truths about what it means to be a man.  We have lost our way.  Radical change is needed to get us going on the right path again.

What is today's verse really saying?  First, women can and should be a  positive example for their husbands through their actions.  While some will get hung up on the idea of being "subordinate," do not let that water down the message.  Both women and men do each other a favor when they serve each other, just as Christ served us.  When Jesus washed the disciples' feet, it was to show that the best way to lead and show each other love is through serving one another.  So here, I believe that this act of serving is one of Peter's main points.

Next, do not get caught up with your external, physical beauty.  Women in today's society often see their beauty from the outside.  On the inside, women are taught that it is strength that makes a woman; however, real beauty shows in our heart through our actions and love we show for others.  Real beauty has nothing to do with strength but with gentleness of spirt.  Christ's beauty came through in His compassionate heart, not His overpowering strength.

Neither men nor women will find true beauty in a successful career.  We will not be able to win over each other's hearts through our strength - only through our gentleness.  We will not find true meaning in our lives through our independence, but through our service to others.

We need to change how we see women in today's culture.  There is nothing more beautiful than a woman with a kind heart and a passion for Jesus.  Physical beauty will fade, but spiritual beauty will last forever.
