The End is Near...

We must be ready:

"The end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be serious and sober for prayers."  -1 Peter 4:7, NAB

Many Catholics shy away from any studies on the end of times.  In the Protestant world, there are those who are heavily focused on studying the end times prophecies, and they may focus on it too much.  However, as Catholics, that does not mean that we should ignore it altogether.

No one knows the day or hour of when the Lord will come.  That is where many Protestant prophecy scholars get it wrong.  Just this year alone, I have heard of a couple of dates that have come and passed without anything really happening.  When their predictions do not come true, these scholars fade back from the limelight once again.  Eventually, the next great scholar will come along with his prediction of why a certain day is the day.  The cycle just continues to repeat itself.

Another fun thing to read about is how the predictions of other cultures play into prophecy.  Many will cite 2012 as the beginning of the end times because of old Mayan calendars.  There was even a movie that predicted 2012 as the year the world would end.  Well, when we celebrate New Year's Day 2013, I wonder where their theories will focus on next.  Others have focused on the prophecies of Nostradamus.  Somehow, they interpret his mystic poems into prophecy, and they use his words to stir up a frenzy.  Do not get caught up in the frenzy.

Will the world as we know it come to an end?  Will Christ come again?  Yes, on both accounts.  How do we know that?  The Bible tells us so.  There are a number of prophecies, the most famous being from Revelations, that speak of the end times.  Christ Himself spoke of His return many times.  There is no doubt that He will come again, but we do not have any idea when that will be.

What can we do to prepare ourselves?  Pray.  When you think that you have prayed enough, pray some more.  The only thing that we can truly to do prepare ourselves is to keep a life in prayer.  The bonus side effect of a life in prayer is that it prepares us for no matter what comes.  If the world does not come to an end in our lifetime, we have the hope of being reunited with Christ in heaven, and prayer is the path to get there.

Do not spend a lot of time worried about the end of the world coming in 2012.  Instead, focus your life on prayer.  If the end comes, you will be prepared.  If it does not come, you will still be prepared.  Do not live your life worried about what will happen tomorrow, but focus instead on what you can do today.
