Follow the Leader...

Today's verse is a message for "the rest of us":

"Likewise, you younger members, be subject to the presbyters. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for: 'God opposes the proud but bestows favor on the humble.'"  -1 Peter 5:5, NAB

Yesterday, we read Peter's mission statement for the presbyters, or priests, and today, we read the message that he wants to share with the rest of us.  First, we must follow the leadership of our priests.  Second, we must act humble in all things, toward each other and toward our priests.  I think it is important to keep these two things together, because it is often our pride that stops us from truly following the message of Christ.

Each week, we sit in the pews and listen to the homilies from our wonderful priests.  When we agree with the message, we love to say "Amen!" and "Alleluia!"  But, what about the times that we do not like the message?  What about the times that we feel guilty because the message points out our sins?  Do we still say "Amen?"

Our priests are charged with sharing Christ's message with us, even when it is unpopular.  Even if we walk out the door because of their message, they must share it anyway.  Christ's message was not exactly popular in His day either.

If we want to gain anything from our faith, humility is essential.  Without humility, we will not be able to change and become the people God wants us to be.  Without humility, our stubborness will not allow us to really hear the message being shared with us.

For an entire year, I sat in the pews being reminded of my sins.  I was newly Catholic, but there were choices that were not convenient for my life at the time. I understood the message, but I was not humble enough to accept it.  Eventually, it led me to darker times; times I could have avoided if I had simply been humble and listened in the first place.

Are you in the same situation?  Is your pride keeping you from the life Christ meant for you?  Is there something that you are holding onto that is keeping you from a better relationship with our Lord?  It's time to let it go.  It's time to set pride aside and follow Christ's message that our priests are so bravely sharing with us.  I promise you; you will not regret it.
