Through Knowledge...

Our new life starts from the knowledge that we gain:

"His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power. Through these, he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divine nature, after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire."  -2 Peter 1:3-4, NAB

Honestly, there is so much going on in this verse that I had a difficult time deciding which direction to go in.  The purpose of these daily studies is to dissect the Scripture to make it more understandable.  So, with that in mind, I realized that it kind of plays out like a mathematical equation:

our knowledge x His divine power = (life + devotion) x promises(divine nature - corruption)

Does that make any more sense?  Maybe not.  Let's break it down.  It begins with our knowledge and His divine power.  We must begin by seeking deeper knowledge and understanding of our Lord, and we allow His divine power to multiply that.  His divine power is automatic, but how do we learn more about our Lord?  Simply through prayer, studying Scripture, and coming closer to Him through the Sacraments.   By having an active faith, we will begin to know more each about our God.

Once we begin gaining knowledge and having it multiplied through God's divine power, we have the result of the equation.  It begins with life and devotion.  This is base of what we hope to achieve through a better understanding of Christ.  We hope to reach a more fulfilled life and a deeper devotion to our God through the knowledge we gain.  Even if that is all that we gained, it would be worth the time, but He offers us more than that.

Beyond a better life and devotion to our God, the Lord makes it even better.  How can it be better than that, you ask?  Because He multiplies the grace in our life and deepens our devotion by multiplying it by a few promises.  Those promises are of our share in the divine nature without corruption.  In other words, we have the hope of everlasting life, and we begin to achieve holiness.  Our life and devotion in this world are increased, and then multiplied by our hope for continued life in heaven.

Reading through these verses, it may make your head spin at first, and looking at them as an equation may not have helped those who do not enjoy math so much; however, the equation is simple.  Through our efforts to gain knowledge and the power of God's grace, we can have a better life here on earth and hope for a life with Christ in heaven.  It is as simple as that.
