Growing Stronger...

What is the result of conditioning our faith?

"If these are yours and increase in abundance, they will keep you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Anyone who lacks them is blind and shortsighted, forgetful of the cleansing of his past sins." -2 Peter 1:8-9, NAB

What is Peter referring to as these?  Let's go back one verse:

"For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love."  -2 Peter 1:5-7, NAB

Recently, we discussed how these faith supplements aide in our spiritual growth and conditioning.  We grow stronger by supplementing our faith with virtue, knowledge, self-control, endurance, devotion, mutual affection, and love.  What blessings come from these supplements?  According to today's verse, it prevents us from being idle and unfruitful.  In essence, they allow us to have a more active faith.

When we stop conditioning our physical bodies, simple acts like walking up the stairs can become a chore.  By the time we reach the top step, we are already out of breath.  A couple of years ago, I knew that I was out of shape when I went sledding.  After riding down the hill, I had to make the long hike back up the hill.  Each trip up the hill felt like running a marathon.  Obviously, something had to change.

By spiritually conditioning our bodies, we can more easily climb the hills of life.  The hills may be steep, but we will be well-conditioned to climb even the highest mountains.  To have a long, healthy life, we have to continue to exercise our physical body.  To have a healthy spiritual life, we must continue to condition our spiritual body and aid our conditioning with the supplements to our faith.  May the Lord bless you with a healthy body and an even more healthy spirit.
