The Message Inspired by the Spirit...

How well do we follow the message given to  us?

"Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts." -2 Peter 1:19, NAB

As Peter tells us, we live in a dark, dark place.  Sin and evil loom over us like a dark cloud, and it does not let any light into our lives.  Fortunately, there is a light in the darkness - the Holy Spirit.  Through the message shared with us through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, the Holy Spirit guides us in the darkest of hours, and we can trust that this message will guide us in the right direction.

How do we know that we can trust the message given to us by the Holy Spirit?  The verse continues:

"Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God."  -2 Peter 1:20-21, NAB

One of the biggest arguments that opponents to Christianity point out is that the Bible was written with human hands.  If it was written by human hands, how can we trust that it is the divine Word of God?  Through the works of the Holy Spirit.  By the Holy Spirit, the message shared with us through Sacred Scripture and Tradition is divinely inspired.  As Peter tells us, it comes to us through "human beings moved by the Holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God."

In regards to the Bible, I like to compare it to a biography.  If someone was writing a biography or memoir of  your life, would you allow them to make mistakes?  Would you allow them to embellish the story?  Would you allow them to censor it in any way?  Of course not.  You would want your biography to be an accurate depiction of your life.  Why then would God allow us to make mistakes with His biography?  The all-knowing, all-powerful God that put the stars and the moon in the sky cannot inspire and help write His own biography?  Hardly.

Trust in the Holy Spirit's ability to share with us God's message, as given to us through Scripture and Tradition.  Allow that message to guide you in the darkness, regardless of how dark life may become.  With the light of the Holy Spirit to guide us, we can surely find our way.
