To a New Era...

Today, we begin using our new Mass translation:

"And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim."  -Acts 2:4, NAB

Already, there are those who support the new translation, and those who don't.  Even before we began using the new translation, people were against it, but how can we be so opposed to something before we have even given it a try?

One thing is true about Catholics, change does not come easy.  This is not necessarily a bad thing.  One of the beauties of the Catholic Church comes from its beautiful and rich Tradition; however, that does not mean that we cannot continually grow and improve as a Church.  The new translation of the Mass is exactly that.  Through the new translation, we are aligning the English translation closer to the original Latin, and I applaud it.

After Vatican II, when the first English translation was put into place, it was known then that there would be revisions that would need to be made.  These revisions, then, should not come as a surprise, but as the realization of a plan that is half of a century in the making.

Revising the Mass was not something that was taken lightly.  I won't go into detail about the process (there are plenty of more reliable resources for that), but I was amazed at the amount of time and energy that went into it.  It was not something that was done hastily.  Many of the most influential, English-speaking Church leaders played a role in the process, AND even they enlisted help from others.  Because of their care and effort, we can be sure that the new translation is a positive move for the Church.

As in Acts 2:4, we are blessed to share Christ's message with people from all over the world and in many different languages, but managing those different languages is something that must be done very carefully.  With the new translation, we are embracing the Latin more closely, and we are enhancing our already beautiful Mass.  The Mass is at the center of all that we do as Catholics, and I look forward to celebrating it in this new and exciting way.
