A Personal Relationship...

Peter tells us why he wrote 1 & 2 Peter:

"This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; through them by way of reminder I am trying to stir up your sincere disposition, to recall the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and savior through your apostles." -2 Peter 3:1-2, NAB

When sharing his teachings through the written word, Peter had one mission in mind: to inspire the people to follow the ways of Christ.  He wanted them to have a sincere and true faith.  He wanted them to follow the teachings of the prophets and the commandments of the Lord.  In total, he wanted the people, and us, to always remember what our faith is all about.

It can be easy to get caught up in all of the "religion" that comes along with our faith.  While the religious side of our faith is important, it is our personal relationship with Christ that truly matters.

Through the words he spoke, and the words he wrote, Peter was challenging the people to live out their faith in a very real way.  It is easy to claim that we have faith, but sincerely acting upon it is something completely different.  Knowing the way of the Lord is one thing, but following His way is another.

Often times, it is our "religion" that turns people away from the Church.  Without a deep-rooted faith, they struggle to keep up with all of the rules and practices that come along with our religious beliefs.  Our first goal should be to help these people see beyond the religious practices of the Church and help them find a genuine, true relationship with Christ.

Being Catholic means more than following a set of practices.  As Catholics, we not only follow the Church's guidelines, but we also have a very real relationship with Christ.  This relationship must be the center of our lives and our reason for everything we do.
