Many Will Not Believe...

Many do not believe that Jesus will come again:

"Know this first of all, that in the last days scoffers will come (to) scoff, living according to their own desires and saying, 'Where is the promise of his coming? From the time when our ancestors fell asleep, everything has remained as it was from the beginning of creation.' They deliberately ignore the fact that the heavens existed of old and earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God; through these the world that then existed was destroyed, deluged with water." -2 Peter 3:3-6, NAB

This verse sounds much like the world in which we live today, but we are not the only generation to face critics.  Critics of the Christian faith have existed since Christianity began 2000 years ago.  Because Christ has not come again, and because they cannot see proof of His existence, many will turn away from God.

Each generation of "scoffers" seems to have its own set of excuses to fall back on.  In our time, many will use science as a reason not to believe in anything spiritual.  They only believe in what they can see, feel, and hear with their own senses.  Because faith relies on more than that, they cannot find the truth.  At one time, I, myself, was like these people.

If you do a little research, you will find that many Catholic and Christian scientists helped to form modern science.  Here is a list of some you may have heard of:

  • Roger Bacon, a friar of the Franciscan Order, founded the concept of the "laws of nature"
  • William of Ockham, another Franciscan friar, is best known for Occam's Razor
  • Isaac Newton, who loved to study the Church fathers, "discovered" gravity
  • Gregor Mendel, an Augustinian, is considered the father of modern genetics
  • Georges Lemaitre, a Catholic priest, first proposed the Big Bang Theory

There is no need to separate science from Christianity, yet there will be those who use science as a way to reason away religion.  Instead of seeing science as the argument against religion, we need to see it as the exploration of God's beautiful creation.  Through everything we learn in science, we learn more about the awesome wonders of this earth.
