Preparing Ourselves...

Peter continues talking about when Christ will come again, and He tells us how to prepare ourselves:

"Since everything is to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought (you) to be, conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire." -2 Peter 3:11-12, NAB

The only thing that Peter tells us to do to prepare for the Lord is to ensure that we are conducting ourselves "in holiness and devotion."  That's it.  It's as simple as that.  Simply by living a life modeled after Christ, we can prepare ourselves for Christ's return.

How do we live holy lives?  We live holy lives, first, by living in awe and wonder of an awesome God.  And, we live holy lives by honoring and respecting Christ's sacrifice on the cross.  With those goals in mind, we can focus everything we do on aiming to live at a higher standard.  We can separate ourselves from the world and set our sights on heaven.  By following the commandments of the Lord, we begin to live the life that He always wanted for us.  By regularly partaking in the Sacraments, such as Confession and the Eucharist, we align our lives with the Church and the saints that came before us.

How do we live devoted lives?  We live devoted lives by standing firm in our convictions and working hard to never waiver.  At times, we will all struggle with devotion, but true devotion comes by persevering through our difficulties.  Going to Mass early on Sunday morning, even though a few extra hours of sleep sounds nice, shows devotion.  Living our faith outwardly, despite opposition from family and friends, is a sign of true devotion.  Devotion shows itself not when living a holy life is easy, but when it becomes difficult.

Is your life dedicated to living a more holy life?  Do you pledge your life to Christ in complete devotion?  If you do, you are already preparing yourself for His return.  And, if He does not come again in our lifetime, you are preparing yourself for the day you stand before the Lord.  Either way, living a holy and devoted life will only lead to greater things.
