Christmas + Easter = ChrEaster...

In case you didn't know, the Church is open 52 weeks a year:

"We should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some, but encourage one another, and this all the more as you see the day drawing near."  -Hebrews 10:25, NAB

Next week, we celebrate Christmas and the Nativity of Our Lord.  Among the holy days of the year, this is one of the greatest celebrations that we celebrate.  And forget about Santa Claus, reindeer, sugar cookies, and holly, Jesus is the reason for the season!  Because I want to focus next week on the celebration of this great occasion, I thought this week would be a good time to stand on the soapbox instead.

Ever notice how it can be difficult to find a seat during the Christmas and Easter Masses?  Wouldn't that be a great problem to have every week?  If we did, that would mean that our Church is growing, and more people are taking their faith seriously.  Unfortunately, we know this is not the case.

Throughout my life as a Christian, admittedly, I have had my ups and downs as well, so I do not want anyone to feel that I am condemning them.  Instead, I want to encourage you to come to Church more often.  I can truly say that attending Mass more regularly has brought new vigor to my faith.  By committing myself to do this, I have been able to find an even greater depth to my faith.

Many people simply choose to go to Mass twice a year - at Christmas and Easter.  For that reason, we like to call them "ChrEasters."  We say it jokingly, but it is a real problem in our Church.  How is it that we can find the time for so many things, but we cannot seem to make time for Mass each week?  We owe our very lives to the Lord, yet we cannot give Him one hour a week.

Each week, there are 168 hours for us to fill.  At a minimum, most of us work 40 hours or more, but many of us are stretching that to 50 or 60 hours a week.  Then, add in soccer practices, ballet recitals, football games, and shopping trips, and our week quickly fills.  We somehow juggle all of these activities, but we can't squeeze in one hour a week for the Lord.  It says a lot about where our priorities really are.

This Advent season, make it your goal to make it to Christmas Mass, but then also make it your goal to come back the following Sunday, and the Sunday after that, and the Sunday after that.  Next thing you know, Mass will be a regular part of your life, and I promise you, you will be glad you're there.
