Walking the Walk...

It is important to practice what we preach:

"...then you who teach another, are you failing to teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who forbid adultery, do you commit adultery? You who detest idols, do you rob temples? You who boast of the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?" -Romans 2:21-23 NAB

Each day, I look up the latest verse in one place - the NAB Bible provided by the Vatican itself (click here).  So, between yesterday and today, I went from verse 16 to verse 21.  If you would like to read the verses inbetween, follow the link to the Vatican.  It is also a good idea to put everything back into context of the whole chapter.  Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Primarily, Paul's point is that we need to live what we teach.  We cannot be hypocrites and teach one thing while doing another.  This is true whether we are a relgious education teacher or a parent; the rules still apply. If you are teaching your child or student to follow the ways of Christ, but you do not show them the way by your example, then that child will never listen to what you teach.

In life, the example we set is often more important than the words we say.  We can tell everyone about our faith in Jesus Christ, but showing them makes a much bigger difference.  We can tell everyone how to live a righteous life, or we can show them.  We can tell everyone we meet how to get to heaven, or we can say, "follow me!"

You may have seen this quote here before, but it is one of my favorites.  It is from the beginning of a DC Talk song, and it sums things up well:

"The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."  -DC Talk, What if I Stumble
