The Law...

Do the laws of the New Covenant change the laws of the Old Covenant?

"Does God belong to Jews alone? Does he not belong to Gentiles, too? Yes, also to Gentiles, for God is one and will justify the circumcised on the basis of faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Are we then annulling the law by this faith? Of course not! On the contrary, we are supporting the law." -Romans 3:29-31 NAB

To understand this, we must first understand where the laws of the Old and New Covenants come from.  They come from the Law, God Himself.  So, do not see it as one set of laws that God had with the Jews and one set of laws under the New Covenant with Christians, but as one Law.

God, the Law, does not change.  He is who He is.  His relationship with us has changed over time, but that is because of our own weaknesses.  It is because of mankind's inability to live up to our end of the bargain that we have had such a rollercoaster relationship with the Lord.  He has been the one source of consistency since the beginning.

In my opinion, it seems as if God is getting easier on us.  He has made numerous covenants with us, and we continue to fall short.  He first made a covenant with Adam, and we know how that turned out.  He made another covenant with Noah just before He flooded the world.  He made covenants again with Abraham, Moses, and David.  Still, we could not live up to His expectations, and He sent His Son down to save us.

God's intention all along was to establish a firm relationship with us.  When we struggled to handle this on our own, He sent Jesus down to be the Mediator for us.  Now with Jesus Christ and the help of the Holy Spirit, God wants to establish a lasting covenant with us.  Will this be the last chance He gives us?

God is still the same, which means that the Law is as well.  Over and over again, we fail to live up to the Law, but God continues to reach out to us anyway.  Through Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit, God hopes that we will finally get it right.  If not, we might be in trouble.  One look around at the world today will tell you that trouble is on its way.
