Believing in the Impossible...

Paul recounts the story of Abraham:

"He believed, hoping against hope, that he would become 'the father of many nations,' according to what was said, 'Thus shall your descendants be.' He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body as (already) dead (for he was almost a hundred years old) and the dead womb of Sarah. He did not doubt God's promise in unbelief; rather, he was empowered by faith and gave glory to God and was fully convinced that what he had promised he was also able to do." -Romans 4:18-21 NAB

Can you imagine what Abraham must have felt?  In his old age, he still believed that God would bring him children through Sarah.  Most people would believe that this is impossible.  Well, we should be grateful that Abraham believed in the impossible - the impossible made possible through a loving God.

At different points in our life, we are going to face tough obstacles.  We will have to rely on our faith to overcome seemingly impossible tasks.  When life begins to overwhelm us, we need to have faith like Abraham to believe in the unbelievable.  There is nothing that God cannot do.

Abraham's faith speaks volumes about his faith, and he is due some credit:

"But it was not for him alone that it was written that 'it was credited to him'; it was also for us, to whom it will be credited, who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over for our transgressions and was raised for our justification." Romans 4:23-25, NAB

For all of the credit Abraham is due, we will also receive credit for our faith in Jesus Christ, who gave His life for us on the cross.  We may not know what it was like to be Abraham, but we can truly know what it means to have faith like Abraham.  We are called to believe in the impossible, and it begins with our faith in Jesus Christ, the One who makes all things possible.
