A True Hero...

Despite our weaknesses, Christ gave His life anyway:

"For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath." -Romans 5:6-9 NAB

Heroes.  When you think of heroes, what comes to mind?  Do you think of our brave men and women serving their country?  Do you think of our policemen, firemen, and other first responders?  Or, do you think of superheroes with special powers that run around with tights and capes on - saving the world from impending doom?  Everyone has their own definition of hero.

In today's verse, Paul tells us that Christ is the ultimate superhero.  Why?  Because He gave His life for us even though we did not do anything to deserve it.  In fact, we did just the opposite in many ways, but He still decided to lay down His life for us.

Imagine you were faced with a situation where you were asked to give up your life to save someone else's.  For instance, donating an organ to someone else or pushing someone out of the way of a speeding bus.  Now, if that person has lived a worthy life, you probably would not hesitate.  What if that person was not worthy?  What if you knew that they lived a fallen, sinful life?  Would you still try to save them?  Most of us would stumble in that situation, but Christ did not.  He knew that we were not worthy, but He gave His life anyway.

The world is full of heroes, but we may not find many superheroes.  Each day, there are men and women who are willing to give their lives to save the lives of others, and we go out of our way to celebrate them.  We celebrate their sacrifice with special holidays, parades, and bumper stickers on our car.  Yet, for as great as these men and women are, how often do we celebrate Christ?  Of course we have Christmas and Easter, but when was the last parade you saw in Christ's honor?  As a society, celebrating Christ is something that we are drifting farther and farther away from.

Let's begin to change how the world sees Christ.  Let's show the world what a true hero looks like.  Instead of celebrating the gift He gave us a couple of times a year, we need to celebrate it each and every day.  Through Christ, we are all saved - every one of us.  Truly, Christ is the Hero that saved all heroes.
