Knowing God's Will...

How do we begin to know and understand God's will for our lives?

"And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will." -Romans 8:27 NAB

Can you honestly say that you have a firm grip on what God's will is for your life?  For me, as soon as I think that I have it all figured out, life throws me a curve ball, and I have to completely change course.  Every time I get a clear picture of my long-term future, that picture changes.  For any one of us, this can be extremely frustrating.

First, we have to learn that there is no crystal ball for us to look into.  We have no way of knowing what out futrue holds or where our life may take us.  Our best bet then is to lay down long-term plans that are flexible enough to adapt to twists and turns of our lives.  And, when changes do happen, we have to be able to adapt our plan to match.

Next, once we realize that it is impossible to have a firm grip on our long-term future, we need to move our attention to the short-term.  I may have a hard time figuring out what God's long-term plans for me are, but I think I can see the short-term.  With the right focus, we can see what God wants us to be doing right now, in this moment, and we can at least find comfort in that.

Five years ago, if you told me that I would be where I'm at in my life today, I would have laughed at you.  Ten years ago, I would have had you committed to a hospital.  Yet, despite what I thought then, I know that this is exactly where I'm supposed to be.  God had this plan for my life all along, but I was not ready for it yet.  There are still times that I don't think I'm ready.  So, if you're worried that you don't have it all figured out yet, don't worry, you're not alone.

Part of me feels like God wants me to get published.  Another part feels that He wants me to speak about my experiences.  These are all great, but I've had that feeling for ten years now, but what I would talk about now is far different than what I would have talked about then.  God has put these things on my heart, and I have tried to make them happen my way.  Much to my chagrin, it's not about my timing, but about His.  I have to be willing to wait for when He thinks the time is right, not when I do.  The same goes for you too.

We will never have all of the answers.  We will never know what our future holds.  All we can do is hold on tight to the hope that we have in our Lord, Jesus Christ.  And, each day, if we focus on doing the will of God in all of the small things, they will begin to add up to a life spent following God's will, wherever it may take us.
