Focus on Today...

The key to a productive spiritual life is taking it one day at a time:

"Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil." -Matthew 6:34, NAB

Another translation, the Revised Standard Version, finishes that verse by saying, "...Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day."

One of the greatest roadblocks we will ever have to overcome is our own worries.  Our worries, that draw on our fear, stop us from truly being able to accomplish anything.  How can we get anything done today if our whole day is spent worrying about what will happen tomorrow?

Fear comes in a number of forms - fear of failure, fear of disappointment, fear of rejection, and even fear of the unknown.  These fears, regardless of how rational or irrational they may be, can stop us dead in our tracks.   They can consume our every thought.  Instead of focusing on today's task-at-hand, we are lost on something that may or may not happen in the future.

Even our faith can be bogged down by the worries of today.  Each day, we are faced with choices and situations that allow us to deepen our faith.  Whether we are called to serve in some fashion, or we are simply looking to spend a little time with Scripture, fear and worry creep in and draw us away from the right choices, and we miss out on great opportunities to grow in our faith.

Eventually, our life begins to slip away - one day at a time.  All of our "todays" are wasted by focusing on our "tomorrows."   We will tell ourselves that we will begin to change our outlook tomorrow, but that tomorrow may never come.  To break this cycle, we have to make a change, and we have make that change today!  Each day, today and every today after, we must make the conscious choice to let go of tomorrow.

In the first part of this verse, Paul tells us, "Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself."  How can we do this?  Simple, by taking it one day at a time.  If we focus all of our energies on today, our days will be more productive - both physically and spiritually.  We'll get more done around the house, at the office, with our families, and in our spiritual lives as well.  Great todays lead to great yesterdays and even better tomorrows.  As we find ways to improve our todays, we can find assurance that our tomorrows can be just as productive.
