On Fire...

As time goes by, do not let your fire for the Lord dwindle down:

"Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord." -Romans 12:11, NAB

During our life, we will go through many ups and downs in our spiritual life.  There will be times when we are completely on fire for the Lord, and times when we are not.  As much as we try to avoid the periods when our faith cools down, they will come anyway.  The trick, then, is to make those times that we are on fire in faith burn as hot and as long as we can.

Like any fire, our faith will start to dwindle if we fail to tend to it regularly.  If we do not do anything to fuel the flames, we can be certain that our faith will not burn as brightly.  What fuels the flames of our faith?

  • Regular and consistent prayer
  • Reading Scripture
  • Attending Mass /  the Eucharist
  • Going to Confession regularly
  • Almsgiving
  • Volunteering our time
  • And more...

There are a lot of things that we can do to keep our faith strong, but it is by no accident that Paul mentions serving the Lord in the same sentence as keeping the zeal and remaining fervent.  Through active service, it allows us to continually fuel the fires of our faith.

Whether you take a more formal role as a Lector or Eucharistic Minister, or you simply volunteer time at a parish event, your acts of service will feed your faith.  Whether you spend time actually serving your parish or offer your time out in the community, you will receive graces.  Regardless of how we serve others and act out our faith, we will keep our spirit burning brightly.

Faith is more than simply believing in something; it is a call to action.  Do not see faith as something  you have, but instead see it as the motivator behind all that you are and all that you do.
